Instagram Reels Ads vs Boosting vs Buying Views: Which Should You Pay For?

Three-column comparison card of Reels ads, boosting and buying views, beside a city night Reel

There are three common ways to pay for attention on a Reel. You can build a Reels ad in Meta Ads Manager, tap Boost on the Reel itself, or buy views for it. They sound alike, and they get compared on price per 1,000. But each one does a different job.

This guide explains each option using Meta's and Instagram's own help pages, puts them in one decision table, and tells you which to pick for your goal. We sell Instagram views only, not ads or boosts, so we are clear about where views fit and where they don't. For the bigger picture, see our guide on whether boosting Instagram posts is worth it.

What is the difference between Reels ads, boosting and buying views?

A Reels ad is a full ad built in Meta Ads Manager that runs between other people's Reels. Boosting turns one of your existing Reels into a simple ad from inside Instagram. Buying views adds plays to your Reel's public view count. The first two find a chosen audience; the third only raises the number under the Reel.

Here is the three-way decision table. Everything in the ads and boost columns comes from Meta's Business Help Center and Instagram's Help Center.

What are Instagram Reels ads?

Instagram Reels ads are full-screen, vertical ads that appear between organic Reels as people scroll. You create them in Meta Ads Manager by choosing the Instagram Reels placement, or by using Advantage+ placements, which include Reels automatically. They go through Meta's ad review before they run.

Instagram Reels ads are one placement inside Meta's ad system, not a separate product. Meta's Business Help Center describes them as full-screen, vertical ads that appear between Reels, and you reach them by choosing placements in Meta Ads Manager. You can pick Advantage+ placements, which include Instagram Reels automatically, or select Reels by hand. Ads Manager builds every ad in three levels: the campaign sets the objective, the ad set holds the audience, placements, budget and schedule, and the ad holds the creative. Instagram's Help Center calls Ads Manager the most complete way to advertise, because it gives you access to every Advantage+ feature available to you. Every ad is reviewed against Meta's Advertising Standards, and Meta says that review is typically completed within 24 hours, though it may take longer. Pricing comes from an auction, so there is no fixed cost per Reels ad. Meta also notes that Reels ad placement availability varies by country.

A side note: many people searching "Instagram ads on Reels" just want fewer ads in their own feed. This page is about paying for Reels ads, not hiding them.

What does boosting a Reel do?

Boosting turns an existing Reel into an ad without leaving Instagram. Instagram's Help Center describes the flow: open the Reel, tap Boost, choose a goal, audience, budget and duration, review, and confirm. You need a professional account, and the boost goes through the same ad review as any other ad.

Not every Reel can be boosted. Instagram's Help Center lists limits: Reels with licensed music can't be boosted, and neither can Reels with face or camera effects, GIFs, product tags, interactive stickers or third-party camera filters. It suggests original audio or royalty-free music from its Sound Collection instead. Our guide on how to boost a Reel on Instagram covers each step and limit.

Instagram boost vs Meta ads: which gives you more control?

Meta ads built in Ads Manager give you more control than a boost. Instagram's Help Center calls Ads Manager the most complete option, with every Advantage+ feature and full placement choices. Boosting from the app is faster, but more of the setup is decided for you.

In our opinion, boost when you have a Reel that already performs and you want more of the same, fast. Use Ads Manager when you need a specific objective, want to test different versions, or want your ad only in certain placements. Either way, compare the result with your own cost per 1,000. Our guide to Instagram ads cost per 1,000 shows how to work it out from the numbers Meta gives you.

What does buying views do?

Buying views does one thing: it adds plays to the public view count of the Reel you choose. Instagram counts a view each time a Reel starts to play or replays. A higher count gives a new Reel social proof, because people tend to give a watched video a chance.

What it doesn't do matters just as much. Bought views don't pick an audience, bring clicks, or add follows and likes by themselves. They are a starting push, not targeting. Meta's Spam policy also lists attempts to "artificially increase viewership", and Instagram can remove plays it treats as inauthentic. We only need a public link, never your password, and we suggest orders in proportion to your normal views. See how ordering works on our page to buy Instagram Reel views.

Which should you pay for?

Match the tool to the job. These picks are our opinion:

  • You sell something and need buyers in a set place: Reels ads in Ads Manager.
  • A Reel is already doing well and you want more reach quickly: boost it, if it meets Instagram's limits.
  • Your Reel uses licensed music and won't boost: make an ad version with original audio, or skip ads for that Reel.
  • You want a launch Reel, music teaser or brand-pitch Reel to look watched: buy views on that one Reel.
  • Your Reels get very few views at all: fix the content first. Our guide on why Instagram views are low lists the usual causes.

Can you combine Reels ads, boosting and views?

Yes, and many small brands do. A sensible mix keeps each tool on its own job. For example, run a Reels ad aimed at buyers in your area, and add 10,000 views ($15.90) to the organic launch Reel on your profile, so people who tap through see a watched video. The ad brings the right people. The views help the first impression.

Keep the budget split honest. If the ad drives sales, put more into the ad. If you only wanted the launch Reel to look strong, a views order may be all you needed.

Reels ads vs boosting vs views FAQ

Are Reels ads the same as boosted Reels?

Both are ads and both go through Meta's review. A Reels ad is built in Ads Manager with full control over objective, audience and placements. A boosted Reel is made from one of your existing Reels with fewer settings.

Why can't I boost my Reel?

Instagram's Help Center lists several reasons: licensed music, face or camera effects, GIFs, product tags, interactive stickers or third-party camera filters. You also need a professional account. If the Reel is eligible and Boost still fails, see our guide on Instagram promotions that are not approved.

Do bought views work on Reels with licensed music?

Yes. Views go to any public Reel, video or post, because they don't pass through Meta's ad system. Story, Live and profile links are not accepted.

Which is cheapest per 1,000?

You can only compare with your own numbers, because ads are priced by auction. Work out your CPM from Ads Manager, then hold it against our fixed $1.99 to $0.69 per 1,000. Remember that they buy different things: impressions to a chosen audience versus plays in a public count.

Is buying views against Instagram's rules?

On paper, yes. Meta's Spam policy lists attempts to "artificially increase viewership". Ads and boosts are within the rules. If you buy views, never share a password and keep orders in proportion to your normal views.
